The Museum’s Founding Directors

Artists Prof. Heide Warlamis and Prof. Efthymios (Makis) Warlamis founded and co-directed the International Designcenter Austria (I.DE.A.), which they opened in 1992, and the Waldviertel Art Museum, which opened in 2009. Heide Warlamis

Born in 1942 in Klagenfurt, Austria, Prof. Heide Warlamis is a sculptor, designer, business manager and art educator. She developed and produced a line of porcelain products which she successfully markets worldwide under the “Vienna Collection” brand. She is renowned for her large sculptures, bronze sculptures and installations in public and private spaces, and her work is exhibited around the world. She ran the Österreichische Galerie für Keramik in Vienna and other art galleries, and has been active in art education for decades.

Makis Warlamis (18.4.1942 – 27.12.2016)

Born in 1942 in Veria, Greece, Prof. Makis Warlamis was an architect, designer, painter, sculptor and art educator. He taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and other European universities, and at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg. He conducted numerous experimental research projects, directed art and cultural projects in Austria and abroad, and published his theories of architecture and design. His paintings have been shown in museums all over the world, among them the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Grand Palais in Paris, the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire in Brussels, the Skulpturhalle in Basel, the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, the Niederösterreichisches Landesmuseum in St. Pölten, Austria, the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, and the Russian Academy of Arts in Moscow. Prof. Warlamis reveiced many honors and awards, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art.
